How to Shop Clearance Without Buying Junk
This week’s Wardrobe Wisdom Wednesday is all about learning how to shop clearance strategically so you walk away with wardrobe wins—not a closet full of cheap regrets.
Because there’s a BIG difference between getting a deal and wasting money.
🍸 Rule #1: Ask Yourself, “Would I Want This If It Weren’t on Sale?”
This might be the most important clearance-shopping question you can ask.
Imagine the sale sticker isn’t there.
Do you still like it?
Would you have picked it up?
Does it actually fit your style?
Can you picture yourself wearing it?
If the only exciting thing about the item is the price…
PUT. IT. BACK. 😂
A $60 dress marked down to $15 isn’t a $45 savings if it spends the next two years hanging in your closet with the tags still attached.
You didn’t save $45.
You spent $15.
🍸 Rule #2: Don’t Let the Discount Decide What You Buy
Clearance sections can make us do some questionable fashion math.
“It’s normally $80 and it’s only $20!”
Okay…but do you need it?
A huge discount doesn’t automatically make something a good purchase.
Instead of asking:
“How much am I saving?”
Ask:
“How much will I actually wear this?”
A $20 item you wear 20 times is a much better investment than a $10 item you wear once.
Wardrobe Wisdom:
The best bargain isn’t always the item with the biggest markdown. It’s the item that earns its place in your closet.
🍸 Rule #3: Check the Quality BEFORE You Celebrate the Price
Clearance doesn’t necessarily mean something is damaged, but you should always inspect your purchase.
Look for:
- Missing buttons
- Broken zippers
- Loose stitching
- Stains or discoloration
- Snags
- Damaged seams
- Excessive pilling
- Stretched fabric
- Makeup or deodorant marks
And when shopping online, read the product description carefully.
Don’t get so excited about saving $30 that you overlook the fact that you’re buying something you’ll have to spend another $30 fixing.
🍸 Rule #4: Make Sure It Fits NOW
We’ve probably all purchased something while telling ourselves:
“I’ll wear this when I lose a few pounds.”
Cutie…
Buy clothes for the body you’re dressing today.
Your wardrobe should serve you now—not become a storage unit for clothes waiting on some future version of you.
If something doesn’t fit properly, isn’t comfortable, or doesn’t make you feel good wearing it, the clearance price doesn’t change that.
🍸 Rule #5: Use the “Three Outfit Rule”
Before buying a clearance piece, mentally style it with at least three things you already own.
Found a $12 blouse?
Great.
Can you wear it with:
👖 Your favorite jeans?
👗 A skirt you already own?
👔 Your work trousers?
If you can immediately create several outfits around it, you’ve probably found a useful addition to your wardrobe.
If buying that $12 blouse suddenly requires new pants, new shoes, a new bra AND a new handbag…
That $12 bargain just became a $100 situation. 😂
🍸 Rule #6: Shop Out of Season—INTENTIONALLY
This is one of my favorite ways to stretch a wardrobe budget.
End-of-season clearance can be the perfect opportunity to purchase pieces for next year.
Buying summer pieces when stores are preparing for fall—or winter pieces when spring merchandise arrives—can mean major savings.
But there’s still a rule:
Don’t buy something simply because it’s cheap.
Look for pieces that aren’t overly trendy and that you’ll realistically still want to wear when that season comes back around.
Think:
- Denim
- Jackets
- Sweaters
- Classic dresses
- Neutral basics
- Quality layering pieces
- Versatile bottoms
Buy ahead with purpose—not just because it’s 75% off.
🍸 Rule #7: Know When “Final Sale” Isn’t Worth the Risk
That final-sale price may look amazing…
Until the item arrives and doesn’t fit.
Before purchasing something you can’t return, make sure you know:
- Your measurements
- The brand’s sizing
- The fabric/stretch
- Whether you’ve worn that brand before
- Exactly how you plan to wear it
If you’re unsure and can’t return it, sometimes the smartest bargain is the one you leave behind.
🍸 Rule #8: Stop Buying Duplicates You Don’t Need
Clearance has a funny way of convincing us we need another version of something we already own.
Before adding it to your cart, ask:
“Do I already own something that serves the same purpose?”
There’s nothing wrong with owning multiple black tops if you actually wear them.
But if you have eight nearly identical black tops and regularly wear only two…
Number nine probably isn’t the wardrobe refresh you think it is. 😂
🍸 The Closet Bar Clearance Checklist
Before you hit ADD TO CART, ask yourself:
✔️ Would I want this if it weren’t on sale?
✔️ Does it fit my body and lifestyle right now?
✔️ Is it in good condition?
✔️ Can I create at least three outfits with it?
✔️ Do I already own something similar?
✔️ Will I realistically wear it?
✔️ Is the quality worth the price?
If you can confidently answer YES, Cutie…
Now THAT’S a bargain! 🍸
🍸 The Real Wardrobe Wisdom
Shopping clearance isn’t about buying the most clothes for the least amount of money.
It’s about finding the right clothes at a better price.
There’s a difference.
A closet packed with $5, $10, and $15 pieces you never wear isn’t a bargain closet.
It’s money sitting on hangers.
So the next time that big CLEARANCE sign starts calling your name, remember:
Don’t shop the discount. Shop your wardrobe.
Buy pieces that fit your style, work with what you already own, and give you more ways to get dressed.
Because being budget-conscious doesn’t mean buying everything that’s cheap.
It means knowing what’s actually worth your money. 🍸
That’s the Closet Bar way—your wardrobe’s Happy Hour, pouring style into your budget.
CHEERS! 🍸
